Farm Cat Friday - The Yurt Has Been INVADED!

The publicist tells me this is not unusual.
She tells me it happens every year around this time.
But this is the first year that we Farm cats have been living in the yurt at this time of year so to us it feels like an INVASION.

An invasion of what you ask?
Noisy, peeping CHICKS!

And we can't even play with them!
The male person built a big box with a lid so we can't get in with them and eat them pet them.
Can you believe it?

I was the first to check them out.

Then Harry figured out something was going on and he joined me.

I have to admit I wasn't to sure about them at first and let Harry get closer.

He jumped right up on the big box!

He is adventuresome, that Harry!

I looked from the freezer 'cause I didn't want to get yelled at by the male person.

But he didn't yell at Harry!
Not even when Harry checked out the box the chicks came in - they come in the mail you know.

Boy, is that Harry brave!
Then Pumpkin decided to see what was in the big box.

He didn't care all that much and just went on with his day.
Not Harry, though.

He spent most of the day just watching his dinner new friends.
I wonder what they think of him?
Especially this years exotic chick...

A White Crested Black Polish.
The publicist is very excited about this chicken.
She has always wanted what she calls a "hairy" chicken. It will look like this when it gets bigger...

For now she says it looks like a chick with a cotton ball glued to its head.

I think the publicist is a little bit silly.
Harry is STILL watching the chicks.
I think Harry is a little bit silly.

Stinky did not care one bit.

Here Chick, Chick, Chick!

I have had several people ask me about the Farm chickens. They haven't disappeared; they are still living in the basement of the publicist's house. She has been known to mumble things about the chickens getting to live in her house before she does. I am not quite sure what this means. It must be some strange human thing....

But anyway the chickens are growing and growing and growing. They will soon have enough feathers to go outside into their chicken tractors. The male person is going to build them this weekend. I have heard rumors of these chicken tractors coming into our goat pens. I am not sure of what I think about this. I do know that Michael the buck is going to butt the heck out them. I mean, he butts the plywood stack so why wouldn't he butt the chicken tractor?

Right now the publicist says the chicks all look like they have the mange. I am not sure what this mange is but after having seen the chickens I never want to have it! Oooooh are they bad looking. Half down and half feathers. They are scary looking. But if you look closely you can now start to tell the hens from the roosters. The roosters' combs are bigger and spikier than the hens'.

The publicist has also figured out the mystery of the little blue mystery chick! Turns out he is a Blue Andalusian. The male person is happy about this because his tail feathers are good for use in flies for the fly fishing that he likes to do in the spare time he doesn't have. It looks like he is going to be a very pretty rooster.

The chickens are still hard to photograph as they are inside under their warming light. And Mr. Andalusian kept running away from the camera. Hopefully when they get outside the publicist will be able to get some better photos. Not to mention the fact that they will be in full feather instead of this mangy current state. They sure do peep up a storm. I was amazed at how much noise they made. Silly chickens!

I hope you have enjoyed this update on the feathered members of the Farm. Now we just have to keep the felines off of the feathers and we will be fine.....

The Chicks Have GROWN!

The publicist let me have a gander (ha ha) at the little chicks and I am amazed at how much they have grown in just a few days. They are living in the basement of her yurt in something called a brooder. They will stay there until they are old enough and strong enough to go outside. It is still pretty cold around here so it is good they are inside where it is warm. They also have a nice light to help keep them nice and toasty.

There are 52 chicks in all (!) 51 of them are the Rhode Island Red chickens and there is one little guy that is a mystery chick. The publicist and male person have been unable to identify him as of yet. He is grey with black eyebrows and they think he is some kind of banty chicken. They are going to have to wait until he gets bigger to know for sure.

They are very funny; they will stretch their little legs and wings out and then settle down for a nap all in a little bunch.

They also like to flock around the food. I don't blame them for this. I am all for food.

The male person bought BIG feeders for when the move outside but they are still too big for the chicks.

Although the little grey chick gave it his best shot...

...and he hopped right in to eat the chick food.

Silly chick!

I think it is going to be interesting to have these chickens on the Farm. I guess it is better than more goats!
